Introduction
Shopify inventory management just got a significant upgrade, and most merchants haven’t heard about it yet.
In July 2026, Shopify released the Physical Inventory feature preview for developers. The headlining addition: native Shopify inventory bins. Named storage locations within a warehouse, each with their own barcode and their own per-item quantity count.
If you’ve ever run a real fulfillment operation on Shopify, you know exactly what’s been missing. A product sitting in three different shelf spots shows up as one number in Shopify’s system. There’s no way to tell the platform that 300 units are in Rack A and 200 are in the overflow section. You track that in a spreadsheet, a third-party WMS app, or by trusting your team to always put things back in the same place. This feature is Shopify’s answer to that problem, and it’s been a long time coming.
What Shopify inventory bins Feature Actually Does
The existing Shopify inventory model is simple: one quantity per item per location. That’s fine for a small operation or a single-shelf setup. It breaks down the moment you have any real warehouse complexity.
Bins add a layer between the location and the item quantity. Each location (your warehouse, your 3PL bay, your retail stockroom) can be divided into named bins. Think shelves, racks, zones, or picking carts. Each bin gets a name, a scannable barcode, and its own on-hand quantity per SKU. The location’s total inventory becomes the sum of all bin quantities plus any stock that hasn’t been assigned to a bin, which Shopify calls “unbinned” quantity.
Per the official Shopify developer changelog, the feature preview includes three core capabilities:
- Bins — Create and update named storage locations within a location, and read on-hand quantities per bin.
- Counts — Set the on-hand quantity of an inventory item in a specific bin using the inventoryCountCreate mutation.
- Purchase orders — Read purchase order data through the GraphQL Admin API, including line items and supplier info.
This is currently available only through the unstable version of the GraphQL Admin API, and only on stores where the Physical Inventory feature preview has been enabled. Shopify hasn’t shown merchants a UI for it yet. It’s still squarely in developer-preview territory.
Why This Is Bigger Than It Looks
The operational cost of not having bin tracking is something most growing merchants absorb quietly. A picker goes to grab an item, finds fewer than expected at the first spot, and now has to either dig around or assume the inventory count is wrong. Cycle counts become a warehouse-wide exercise rather than a targeted check. Shrinkage gets hidden inside location-level discrepancies.
Today those problems get solved by bolting on a third-party WMS app. Some are solid, but they all come with a cost: a monthly fee, an integration layer that can break, and a second system your team has to be trained on. Smaller operations that don’t justify a full WMS end up in spreadsheet territory, which works until it doesn’t.
Native bins remove the need to go outside Shopify for sub-location tracking. That doesn’t replace a full WMS platform for operations that genuinely need demand forecasting, complex putaway logic, or cross-location rebalancing. But for merchants whose core need was just “where is this item in the building,” Shopify will be able to answer that question natively.
It’s worth noting this is part of a broader trajectory. The platform is moving toward being a more complete operational backend, not just a storefront.
What Actually Changes When Bins Go Live
For merchants, the practical shifts will play out across a few areas:
Pick lists become more specific. Apps built on Shopify’s order management layer can start routing pickers to exact bin locations instead of a general “grab it from Location A” instruction. That alone cuts time on every pick.
Cycle counts get faster. You’ll be able to count one bin at a time and reconcile it against Shopify’s record without touching the rest of the warehouse. No more full-wall shutdowns to do an accurate count.
Inventory discrepancies shrink. A lot of the gap between what the system thinks you have and what’s actually on the shelf comes from vague location tracking. Bin-level granularity closes that gap.
Some WMS costs come down. If you’ve been paying for a WMS specifically to track bin-level inventory on top of Shopify, that justification weakens once Shopify handles it natively. Operations that need the broader WMS capabilities, purchasing workflows, supplier management, demand planning, will still benefit from dedicated tools. But the simple cases may consolidate.

How to Prepare Before Bins Ship
The bins API is in unstable preview. There’s nothing to configure in your live store today. But if you’re planning ahead:
Map your current bin tracking. Document exactly what you’re tracking outside Shopify and why. If it’s all sub-location inventory, you’ll likely be able to migrate that to native bins when they go stable.
Talk to your fulfillment or picking app vendor. Ask whether they’re building against the Physical Inventory preview. The best apps in this space will have bin-aware workflows ready at stable release.
Clean up your location structure in Shopify. Bins slot in under existing locations. Messy location data now means messy bin data later. Tidy the foundation before building on it.
Don’t build live integrations yet. The API is explicitly marked as unstable. Schemas can change. Stay informed, but wait for stable before wiring anything into production.
