Notion Goes Offline: Now Use It Without an Internet Connection

Notion has long been celebrated for its versatility in organizing tasks, notes, and projects. However, one significant limitation was its reliance on an internet connection. That has changed with the introduction of Notion’s offline mode, a feature eagerly anticipated by users worldwide.

What You Can Do Offline

With the new offline capabilities, users can:

  • View and Edit Preloaded Pages: Open any page while online, and it becomes available for offline access.
  • Create New Pages: Start new notes or documents without an internet connection.
  • Automatic Syncing: Once reconnected, changes sync seamlessly across devices.

Limitations to Note

While the offline mode enhances productivity, there are some limitations:

  • Advanced Blocks: Features like embeds, forms, and buttons require an internet connection.
  • Automatic Downloads: On paid plans, recently viewed and favorite pages are automatically available offline, but subpages need to be manually downloaded.

How to Enable Notion Offline Mode

  • Desktop: Open the desired page, click the three dots (•••) in the top-right corner, and select “Available offline.”
  • Mobile: Navigate to Settings → Offline, and toggle on “Make Recently Viewed Available Offline.”

Ivan Zhao, the CEO of Notion, explained in a thread on X that the company was unable to release the offline feature earlier due to the app’s complex database structure, which stores various blocks of content. To ensure smooth functionality, Notion had to develop a conflict resolution system to handle situations where multiple users make edits to the same document while offline.

Conclusion

Notion’s offline mode marks a significant milestone in its evolution, aligning with the needs of users who require access to their workspace without constant internet connectivity. Whether commuting, traveling, or working in areas with unstable connections, Notion ensures your productivity remains uninterrupted.
